For many people, excessive sweating of the underarms, hands and feet can significantly interfere with work or social activities. Each patient is first seen in consultation with Dr. Wismer, to discuss previous treatments, outcomes and to determine that no other medical conditions may be causing this disorder. Treatment options may include topical products such as Drysol or Certain Dry, or oral anticholinergic medications such as Ditropan. Botox injections are also used to treat excessive sweating of the underarms, groin, face, palms and soles. The effect typically lasts 6-7 months and can dramatically improve quality of life. The injections take 10-15 minutes and are performed by Dr. Wismer. Topical anesthetic such as EMLA may be applied 1-2 hours prior to treatment which is well tolerated. The benefits are seen within 1-2 weeks of treatment. Dosing depends upon previous treatment results and the extent of the hyperhidrosis. A typical starting dose would be 50 units per axilla, increased in future sessions if necessary. Botox is an extremely safe technique for hyperhidrosis. Reported but uncommonly, a side effect may occur with increased sweating at an untreated site.
Because excessive sweating is recognized as a medical condition, most private insurance companies cover the cost of the medication. The D.I.N. # is 02243721. An additional injection fee of $150.00 is paid by the individual patient.
